Ok, so who knew there would be quite so many versions of the Cardboard template out there?

You will still need to create dashed lines, but at least the lines you are starting with will be easier to work with. Just as a reminder, the laser cutter will only cut lines if:
- the line is RGB red (#FF0000 or 255,0,0). Make sure you are in RGB mode (and not CMYK or Grayscale)
- the line is 0.001 inches thick. Note that the default unit for line thickness is points (pt). You must include the units of "in" with the number. It will convert the number to 0.072 pt if you did it correctly.
- there is no "fill" pattern anywhere. To be sure, select everything and make sure there is a diagonal red line in the fill pallet.
- Use the scissor tool to cut up any lines that need to be part dashed, part solid.
- Select all the lines you want to convert to dashes with the "direct selection tool" (the white arrow). Use shift to select multiple lines. If you do steps 3-6 without clicking off the lines, these actions will be performed on all the lines you select.
- Open the "Stroke" palette (under the Window pulldown) and toggle on the "dashed line" option. You may need to use the palette sub-menu to turn on the options.
- Expand the dashed lines using the "Expand" command under the Object menu.
- Restore the color, fill, and stroke values to pure red (255,0,0), stroke of 0.001 in, and not filled (the expand command will have changed them).
- Examine the resulting dashed lines. The individual dashes should be separate and selectable, very thin, and red.
- Repeat until all the needed dashed lines are created.
