Creating toys is a great way to practice the engineering mindset.
Create a toy that meets the needs of a specific child.
Our clients are first graders from HTe, our partner elementary school.
After a preliminary screening of our 50 or so initial mockups by the HTe first graders, we will divide ourselves into groups of 3-4 to build working versions of the most popular 10-12 toys. Each build group will choose a member to specialize in hardware, in software, and in design.
Week 1: The first step is to brainstorm ways to involve electronics technology into captivating toys.
Week 2: Mockups of these ideas are then presented to the first graders and they vote on which they would most like to see created. Weeks 3-5: Build the chosen toys. Components and tools available include a laser cutter, 3D printers, Arduino-based electronics, servos, motors, LEDs, buttons, and sound cards. Week 6: Exhibition - the first graders will be invited to inspect the final versions of the toys and provide feedback. They will also be able to choose recipients.
